About This Event

Wildlife Preservation Canada needs your help to survey for at-risk bumble bees at MacGregor Point Provincial Park this summer! Come join our volunteer training workshop to learn how to collect valuable data to help conserve these beautiful pollinators.

The training workshop will be held twice (once on a weekday and once on the weekend) to accommodate different schedules. Please sign up for either Thursday, June 18th, or Saturday, June 27th. Both days will follow this structure:

10:30am - 12:00pm: An indoor portion within the Visitor Centre, where a presentation delivered by WPC staff will teach bumble bee identification, survey protocols, and all duties performed by program volunteers.

12:00 - 12:45pm: Lunch

12:45 - 3:00pm: An outdoor portion where we will teach you how to survey for bumble bees, including catching them in nets and transferring them to vials for identification and data recording. This is essentially a practice survey alongside WPC staff. Please wear appropriate attire for the outdoor portion!

Things to bring:

Water/beverages (not provided)

Lunch

Clothing suitable for outdoor work (hiking shoes, long pants, etc.)

Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses)

Enthusiasm!

Please leave a comment of your party size when signing up, including kids!

Known allergies to bee stings? Any questions? Let us know at pollinators@wildlifepreservation.ca.

Please note that while we appreciate all interest in our program, the training workshop is intended for those who want to return to MacGregor Point to conduct independent surveys. If you're looking for a more casual way to survey for bees, or if you can't make it to the workshops, keep an eye out for pop-up bee walks at the Park!
